Skye awoke to the aroma of bacon frying. At first she thought she was dreaming.

She glanced at the clock. Almost nine. She remembered the alarm going off, and finding Jack, who, instead of having left for work, was lying warm beside her.

When she pushed back the covers, he pulled her back and she went willingly. A good while later she drifted back into sleep. “Set the snooze button,” were the last words she remembered.

Now, she threw back the covers and got out of bed. That was definitely the smell of bacon. She took a quick shower, dressed in work clothes, and scooped a pair of running shoes out of the closet. She padded barefoot down the hall to the kitchen, opened the kitchen door just wide enough to peek inside. Jack was standing at the stove, lifting strips of meat onto a paper towel.

She opened the door wider and stepped inside. “Is it a holiday?”

“Sure. What shall we call it?”

She came up to him and hugged him from behind. He was muscular and masculine and was wearing one of Hildy’s old, ruffled aprons because it always made Skye laugh.

And in a flash of insight, she got it. She rubbed her cheek against his back. “I should go out with other guys more often,” she teased.

He turned around. “No.” He pulled her close and kissed her. She indulged for a few seconds, then danced away. “Oh no. No more fun for us. I’ve got to meet Brendan at the camp at ten. And I’m not about to let you burn that bacon.”
